Despite its dramatic name, the Precipice Walk above Dolgellau involves no precipice and no difficulty — it is a 6-kilometre circular path around the rocky ridge of Foel Cynwch, entirely above the Mawddach Estuary, with 360-degree views that rank among the finest in Eryri without requiring a single metre of technical terrain. This is Experience #16 of the Snowdonia 100, and the finest easy walk in southern Eryri.

The View
The path traverses the hillside above the Mawddach Estuary, with the estuary spreading wide below and the mountains rising on all sides. Cadair Idris fills the southern horizon, its summit plateau clear on fine days. To the north, the Rhinogydd ridge provides a long, dark skyline. The estuary itself, with its sandbanks and channels and the Victorian railway viaduct at Barmouth, is visible for much of the circuit. This is a walk that delivers maximum scenic return for minimum effort.
The Name
The "precipice" referred to in the name is the rocky hillside above the path — visible but not traversed. The path itself follows a fairly level contour around the hill, making it unusual among Eryri walks in offering mountain views with no mountain climbing. The Victorian tradition of this walk is long: it was a favourite excursion from Dolgellau when the town was a significant tourist destination in the 19th century.
